When Harry Met Sally ReviewsRating: 5 - One of My Favorite Movies When Harry Met Sally is a joy to watch. Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan) meet in the late seventies when they share a long-distance trip. They travel from the University of Chicago (my alma mater) to New York (the place where I grew up) so I have a special place in my heart for this movie. Harry and Sally dislike each other intensely during the trip. Even during this first trip, their dialogue is interesting and fun, and they seem to have chemistry. They lose touch at the end of the car trip. They meet once or twice more and eventually become friends. The movie works as an answer to the question of whether women and men become friends, but it works even better as an answer to the question of how friends fall in love and whether it is better to be friends first or not. Bruno Kirby and Carrie Fisher are great in supporting roles. Unless you hate all romantic comedies, I strongly recommend this movie. Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan are simply perfect in their roles as long time friends that don't seem well matched, but are drawn to each other. I'm sure just about every person alive has gone through that questioning about someone that's been a friend for a while - would it work? Would it not work? Is it worth risking the friendship? The situations are all ones that are immediately easy to relate to. You get to see the characters change over time, you get to see them adjust their feelings, and wonder and hope and dream. This is definitely a movie that you can watch over and over again, because it's *real*. I highly recommend it. The movie works so well because mainly of the writing by Nora Ephron. I am not a huge fan of the recent Ephron-directed romantic comedies-a little too sticky sweet for my taste. Harry & Sally have just enough cynicism to want me to stay with them for two hours. I wanted to take care of Sally(Meg Ryan) and hang out with Harry(Billy Crystal). They said the smart, funny things that we all wish we could come up with on the spot. And they fell in love over a ten-year period. So simple yet so brilliant. Falling in love with your best friend is the ultimate, and it doesn't happen very often. This film, although the nostalgic music has been ripped off by nearly movie for the past ten years, is a classic.....and I didn't even mention the famous scene in the deli.
